SalidaCaNews received an email from Sheriff Adam Christianson
December 8, 2017

This is in response to Cruisers Break-in (read story here) and posting Supervisor Withrow's contact information.
Supervisor's Withrow's office did contact Sheriff Adam Christianson and Sheriff Christianson sent the following email.
Thank You Sheriff Christianson for taking the time to email us here in Salida, We do hold the utmost respect for all Law Enforcement, especially the deputies that service Stanislaus County.

Here are the facts:

There is a deputy sheriff assigned to the Salida area at 7 AM, 3 PM and 7 PM, 7 days a week. We also have the CHP helping with traffic related issues.

There are no "community deputy sheriffs" like we've had in the past because we are critically short staffed. We were forced to close the Substation in Salida because we couldn't afford to keep it open and staff it. There is a new substation in the library but we cannot staff it.

To give you a sense of where we were and where we're at now:

In 2006 when I was elected Sheriff, we had 214 allocated/funded positions for deputy sheriff. In the middle of economic chaos and at our lowest point, 144. Currently we're at 180 with 20 vacancies. Do the math and we simply cannot restore any services other than patrol operations (calls for service) and our STING Team. We run 80,000 calls each year for service and there are not enough deputy sheriffs on patrol for the entire County, let alone Salida and/or any other community in the unincorporated areas. As staffing levels increase, we will continue to deploy additional resources.

The Community Deputy Resource Program is next on our list of teams to re-activate following economic chaos but we are struggling to recruit and retain well qualified men and women to fill our vacancies.

The funding or "revenue" is not the issue. The revenue from Salida will not get you more deputy sheriffs. Crime in Salida is not significant as compared to other parts of the County. We allocate/adjust patrol resources to areas with the highest call volume. Salida has the same amount of patrol resources as all of the other unincorporated communities throughout the County with the exception of high crime areas. Equitable resourcing is important.

The Board of Supervisors made public safety restoration their highest priority. We're not critically short staffed because of fiscal constraints or budget shortfalls, we're critically short staffed because we cannot recruit and retain well qualified men and women to be deputy sheriffs and fill our vacancies. Why?

1. Most of our applicants are not qualified and do not meet our standards. We hire 1 or 2%.
2. We're not the highest paid agency in the central valley. We lose deputy sheriffs to other law enforcement agencies who offer a better salary/benefits package.
3. There has been a chilling affect on our recruitment thanks to our elected officials, the main stream media and many others who have demonized and villianized our profession.
4. Attrition. Many law enforcement officers are retiring because of the current political climate and negative attitude toward law enforcement.

As staffing levels improve, we'll continue to staff up patrol resources throughout the County, not just one community.

Let us know if you need anything else.

THEFT OF MEMORIES
November 5, 2015 a fire claimed the house of the Gorne's.
They lost everything but a few momentos. All their household goods were destroyed and they have reloacted to a place in Salida until their house is repaired. In the meantime they had boarded up the house.
Karen Gorne left her hope chest at the house that stored her wedding dress, her mothers handmade wedding dress, some of her childrens baby clothes, crystal vases and glasses. These were all memor...bilia that has no monetary value to them but is part of their lives and means more than money to her and her family. They are irriplacable. The hope chest 60 years old lane cedar chest is dark wood with a green floral print chushion top with smoke damage.
Someone broke into the boarded up house and took the hope chest. The hope chest is very heavy and would have taken more than one person to remove it. They noticed it missing on January 18th.
