MODESTO'S ADDING INSULT TO INJURY TO SALIDA'S
SR-99/SR-219 KIERNAN AVENUE Interchange Reconstruction

Picture
June 20, 2016, some residents in Salida were invited to a ribbon cutting for SR-99/SR-219 KIERNAN AVENUE Interchange Reconstruction at 11:00 am. Toni Madrigal Modesto City Councilman and Jenny Kenoyer Modesto city councilwoman whom also voted to annex Wood Colony and Salida was present at this ribbon cutting, we are county and have nothing to do with the City of Modesto so why are they here?  Salida News arrived and to our surprise the Salida Chamber of Commerce was not invited, instead the Modesto Chamber of Commerce was there to perform the ribbon cutting.  WHAT????  This is NOT Modesto!!!  This is Salida and we have our very own Salida Chamber of Commerce!!  This is a slap in the face by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, even Cecil Russell -President & CEO of Modesto Chamber of Commerce, knows there is a Salida Chamber of Commerce.  Does this man give two bits about Salida?  This is an apparent way of digging his deep sharp claws into the backs of the people that fought of his spearhead threat of taking Salida into the grips of Modesto!  Cecil Russell will claim he was not behind the threat of annexation but even former Modesto Mayor Marsh admitted just that "Marsh has accused the chamber and its allies of pushing the city to designate all of Wood Colony for development during the general plan amendment discussions" www.modbee.com/news/article84018632.html. see Modesto Bee article front page June 16, 2016  Why did he do this?  If Cecil Russell achieves his goal he will allegedly gain a substantial amount of money.
CalTrans, StanCOG and Stanislaus County need to make things right and have a do over ribbon cutting.  This is just more than a slap in the face and we would not expect anything less than a do over.  Make things right and have the Salida Chamber of Commerce do the ribbon cutting in Salida.  Modesto doesn't even own an inch of land surrounding the SR-99/SR-219 KIERNAN AVENUE Interchange Reconstruction.

Mayor Brandovold take Salida and Wood Colony out of Modesto's Current Plan and out of any future Spear of Influence?
Modesto is resorting back to the previous plan and will be voted on sometime this summer.  It will put Salida back on their plan to place in their sphere of influence and then annex Salida.
BAD NEWS!!!

Senior Disneyland trip up in the air for some seniors at Gregori High on Friday the 13th.
Gregori High School did confirm with Salidacanews that they did reserve 8 buses to transport their seniors to Disneyland for their Senior trip. This is a once in a lifetime event for all the seniors to enjoy. Gregori did contract with Adventure America and the representative at Gregori did say they were confirmed in advance they were to receive 8 buses. Only 6 buses showed up this morning and there are still seniors (unknown count) still waiting. The school has offered them a full refund, unfortunately that doesn't replace the memories they would take with them for a lifetime.
We reached out to contact Adventure America and left a message. Christina did call us back and informed us that they do contract with other travel companies and two bus drivers did decide they didn't want to drive. Adventures America is still trying to provide the rest of the seniors their bus ride. They are very concerned and doing their best to locate another bus for up to the 40 seniors that have been left waiting at Gregori High school for a ride.

Approximately 15 officers were training today and recognized by the sound an accident had occurred. The officers ran out and we're able to remove the truck and she had only received minor injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital. The off duty officers did a wonderful job in rescuing the lady from under the pickup.

Modesto's short-term sprawl plan
February 3, 2015
Guest reporter for Salida Ca News - Katherine Borges

MODESTO, CA - The Modesto Bee's Kevin Valine hit the mark in his article, “Lots of room for growth in Modesto” when he referred to the amount of Modesto's inventory of vacant land, “The short answer: an awful lot”.  The Modesto City Council’s Economic Development Committee presented the updated urban growth review on Monday at the Alliance Center.

Modesto City Planner Patrick Kelly reiterated Valine's comment, “We believe that we would.” in whether there would be plenty of available land for residential units. Despite some infrastructure issues to be resolved in the Tivoli development, city planners estimate the development in northeast Modesto will produce twenty-five units per acre.

But when it comes to available land for business and industrial parks, disagreement arose. Modesto Chamber of Commerce's Craig Lewis, claimed businesses locate in Mountain House and not Modesto because, “Fees in this county and city are way too high.” But Community and Economic Development Director, Brent Sinclair countered, “Mountain House has higher fees.”

Sinclair also reviewed for the committee and members of the public in attendance the various Measure A and M votes that were on the ballot in 2009. These measures are advisory votes cast by the public and all of the 2009 measures in the north and to the west of Modesto received a majority of “No” votes. Despite this, Sinclair pointed out that the City Council can ignore the results of these advisory votes at their discretion. It seemed apparent that this will come to pass when Modesto City Councilwoman Jenny Kenoyer, approached some Wood Colony residents at the meeting to say, “Modesto needs shovel-ready land in order to get companies here.” Kenoyer is either ignoring or ignorant to the fact that neither Wood Colony nor Salida's Community Plan land is anywhere near “shovel-ready”.

And the land they wish to annex from Wood Colony and Salida is not the only land far from being shovel-ready either. Land surrounding Johansen High School reportedly has “issues” and the area known as “Fairview” is lacking water infrastructure. It may end up being ten years or more before this land is ever developed. Will the companies that Kenoyer cites wait that long?

Modesto's Comprehensive General Plan Update is expected to be completed by October 2015.

Salida Community Toy Drive
                                                                helps local families.
Meet Denise Parga of Salida,
She moved here three months ago, Denise is originally from Merced, she realized the violence in the area was more then a single mother of ten could handle.  She moved to Modesto three years ago, after her 17 year old son was shot, he survived and is doing well. " I realized moving to Modesto, that I had moved from the frying pan right into the fire," Denise said.  She then moved to Salida and since feels a lot safer in her community, Denise loves the schools here and said she has found her new home.  Her story reaches back to 1998 when her first husband was shot and killed in Las Vegas, he was gambling in one of the casinos and bumped into someone after getting up to leave a slot machine, the person pulled out a gun and shot him.  Later Denise met Ray who had children of his own, they soon married and had a blended family.  In 2005 just five months after their son was born, Ray was hit and killed by a train.  The nightmare had started all over again for Denise.  She is now a single mother to ten children, she is raising her late husbands children and was not going to be able to afford Christmas this year.  Until she received a phone call from Salida Chamber of Commerce and Salida Rotary that she had been chosen to come down and pick Christmas presents for her five children which are under 18.  She will get to pick two toys, one puzzle, and one book for each child,  she will also get to pick a game for the entire family. "I would not be able to give my kids Christmas this year and I cannot thank this community enough for their help.  All my expenses from moving has taken a toll on me this year," Denise said.
Denise Parga is just one of the several families that will receive gifts this year.

All the toys donated in photo's below.
Salida has come together to make a difference in peoples lives and we are very proud of our community.

The toy drive was a HUGE SUCCESS!!

  • Where does Salida Fire receive its revenue?
  • What services are and can be provided to the constituents of the District?
  • Description of the area served.
The Board will also consider directing staff to proceed with the formation of a citizen's advisory committee to explore options to best serve the community in the future.
